Users will soon have a fresh option that permits them to cut down on the volume of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the company revealed that it now features in excess of 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale rollout. This shift comes amid a rise in content created by AI, fueled by emerging AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that almost one in 10 of the quickest rising channels on another major platform only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this material is considered “AI slop”, a term for inferior, bulk-generated content that is typically absurd or dreamlike.

Our research shows that many people like content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we intend to give people the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service tagged as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 mn videos are uploaded to the service every day, making AI content a relatively small part of its total content library.

User Control Features

Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the volume of AI content they watch by using the “manage topic” feature in the application and picking the AI content topic. Further subjects that are already be modified under the tool include politics, clothing, aesthetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies mandate users to label convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits dangerous deepfakes of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any believable AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be taken down under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the platform will henceforth attach an artificially created label to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an cross-platform project for recognizing artificial media. This action is designed to deter users from attempting to evade the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is also establishing a $2 million educational fund for experts and institutions to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will benefit charitable organizations dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has supported its safety measures, following discussion over intentions to cut jobs for numerous safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to cut hundreds of positions in its user protection division in London, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content ahead of it has to be seen by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content seen by safety staff over the last 12 months due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us process content quickly.”
