Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
